Kumud Acharya, Ph.D., serves as DRIs ninth President. Pres. Acharya leads more than 600 scientists, engineers, and research support staff who rank among the top in the world in their specialties, which include atmospheric, hydrologic, earth and ecosystem, and wildfire sciences. Dr. Acharya became interim president at DRI in September of 2019 and was named permanent president in September of 2020.
Pres. Acharyas focus as president has been fostering growth in scientific areas that matter now, including wildfires, drought, extreme weather, climate modeling, and STEM education. DRI scientists are working to solve some of the worlds most urgent climate questions. Pres. Acharya encourages collaborations between scientists at UNLV and UNR, and with scientists around the world to foster scientific discovery, to solve some of the states most pressing environmental questions, and to further economic benefits to the state. DRI supports graduate students from Nevada universities who work alongside DRIs world-renowned scientists, and under Pres. Acharyas leadership, DRI has launched an undergraduate internship immersion program to foster diversity and access to careers in science. He has also expanded DRIs STEM education program, which provides teacher trainings and free resources for Nevada teachers to enhance STEM education.
DRI is a soft-money institution characterized by the entrepreneurial spirit of the faculty at DRIs Reno and Las Vegas campuses. Many scientists have found that the academic freedom DRI provides has contributed to their success and their motivation to pursue scientific questions of interest to them. Maintaining this culture and support system is a critical responsibility of Pres. Acharya and DRIs leadership team. Under Pres. Acharyas leadership, DRIs research grants have grown from $31.8 million in FY2019 to more than $60 million in FY24, making DRI among the top nine percent of institutions in funding in geosciences, the top six percent for research funding in atmospheric sciences, and in the top three percent in geological and earth sciences. For every $1 that the state of Nevada provides to support DRIs facilities and administration, DRI scientists bring in nearly $5 in outside grants and contracts that have a positive economic benefit to the state.
Pres. Acharya is also leading DRIs development of the DRI Research Park, a 328-acre site adjacent to DRIs Reno campus that will bring technology companies to co-locate near DRIs Reno campus, further expanding scientific knowledge and discovery in Nevada. He serves on the boards for the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance (LVGEA) and the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN). LVGEA and EDAWN are committed to growing high quality jobs and improving the economy and quality of life of the people in the Las Vegas and greater Reno-Sparks regions.
As a research professor in ecological engineering, Pres. Acharya has led pioneering work in Nevada and around the world to help water managers address aquatic invasive species, traditional and emerging contaminants threatening important freshwater systems. His 25-plus years of environmental study have blended traditional research on the health of rivers, lakes, and wetlands, with applied research to better understand the impact of climate change and other man-made stressors on aquatic ecosystems. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and served as first-author on many publications focused on water and ecosystem health.
