Professional Interests
Dr. Wang’s overarching research theme is to understand aerosol sources, transformation, and impacts. Specifically, his research interests include the physical and chemical characterization of aerosols, pollution source characterization, air quality measurement, and aerosol instrument development. His research involves a wide range of instrument design, laboratory method development, field measurement, numerical simulation, and data integration. Dr. Wang has been involved in the development of a multitude of instruments, including: the nanoparticle aerodynamic lenses for efficiently delivering nanoparticles into aerosol mass spectrometers, the TSI DustTrak DRX Aerosol Monitor for real-time size-segregated aerosol mass concentration measurement, the DRI Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS), and the DRI Model 2015 Multiwavelength Thermal/Optical Carbon Analyzer. Dr. Wang is the principal investigator of projects to study lithium-ion battery fire emissions and suppression, vehicle tailpipe and non-tailpipe (brake, tire, and road wear) emissions, emissions from mining fleets, industrial stacks, and fugitive dust sources in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region in Alberta, Canada. Dr. Wang has served as co-chair and chair of the Instrumentation Working Group of the American Association of Aerosol Research (AAAR) annual conferences and as chair of the Young Investigators Committee of the AAAR. Dr. Wang has been granted three patents and published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles. He is the recipient of the 2020 AAAR Benjamin Y. H. Liu Award (which recognizes outstanding contributions to aerosol instrumentation and experimental techniques). He received the 2021 DRI Science Medal and the 2024 Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Regents’ Mid-Career Researcher Award for his outstanding scientific contributions.
Funded by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Brookwood-Sago Mine Safety Grants, Dr. Wang has been conducting miner training to reduce respirable dust and crystalline silica exposure and to improve respiratory protection: DRI Miner Training Program.
Dr. Wang serves as the Director for Atmospheric Sciences Graduate Program at the University of Nevada, Reno: Atmospheric Sciences Graduate Program.
